Beijing is the national capital of the People's Republic of China located in the Beijing Municipality in northern China. Surrounded by the Hebei Province and bordering Tianjin Municipality to the southeast. During World War II known to the Allies as "Peking".
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the city was captured by the Japanese Army on July 29, 1937. The city became the seat of the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, a puppet state that ruled the Japanese-occupied northern China. This government was later merged into the larger Wang Jingwei government in Nanking (Nanjing).
