Location
Kauaʻi Island is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. Also spelled Kauai in English. Also known as "Garden Isle". To the east is the Kaʻieʻie Waho Channel (Kauaʻi Channel) and beyond Oahu. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today part of Hawaii in the United States of America.

Nawiliwili Harbor
On December 30, 1942 Japanese submarine I-3 surfaced and fired twenty 5.5" HE shells at the breakwater and a nearby building identified as a warehouse. Most projectiles fell short of the target. Only one house was damaged by shell fragments. One shell perforated a large gasoline storage tank, but failed to explode. The total damage caused was estimated at $500.
