    North Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku Utara)  Indonesia
North Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku Utara) encompasses the northern half of the Molucca Island Group (Molucca Islands). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Indonesia. Borders Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku) to the south and West Papua Province to the east and Sulawesi (Celebes) to the west. Borders the Pacific Ocean to the north. Also, the Halmahera Sea to the east and Ceram Sea to the south and Molucca Sea to the west.

Wartime History
During February of 1942 occupied by the Japanese during their occupation of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Many of the islands were under Japanese control until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. Attacked by Allied aircraft during the middle of 1943 until late 1944. On September 15, 1944 U. S. Army forces landed on Morotai (Moratai) and developed the island with two airfields to support operations into the southern Philippines.

Halmahera Island  large island located at near the western tip of New Guinea.
Miti Island  located off the eastern coast of Halmahera.
Ternate Island  located to the west of Halmahera, prewar the seat of the Dutch colonial government.
Wai Island  small island off Halmahera.
Obi Islands (Ombirah, Kepulauan Obi)  located between Halmahera and Ceram (Seram).
