Location
The Dampier Strait is located between Waigeo Island and Batanta Island in the in Raja Ampat Islands and the Vogelkop Peninsula on western New Guinea. Named after British explorer William Dampier. In Indonesian known as Selat Dampier. The Dampier Strait bisects the Raja Ampat Islands bordering Batanta Island, Gam Island and several other small islands including Wai Island, Mansuar, Kri Island and Koh Island and Arborek Island, Augusta Island, Duiven Island, Djerief Island, Mainsfield Islands, Woodford Reefs and Fam Islands. Prewar and during World War II part of the Netherlands
East Indies (NEI). Today, located in the Raja Ampat Regency in West Papua Province (West Irian Jaya) of Indonesia. Note, there is another Dampier Strait in West New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
