Map of Attack on Shuri Defense 25 April - 3 May 1945 on Okinawa Island
The map shows the central Okinawa Island. Annotations including Maeda Escarpment (Hacksaw Ridge, Big Escarpment). At the center is Shuri and at the lower left is Naha. Borders the East China Sea to the west and Buckner Bay (Nakagusuku Bay) to the east. Also indicated is Moshinawa Airfield (Machinato) on the west coast and Yonabaru Airfield inland from the east coast. The solid line bisecting the escarpment and Maeda "–X X–" indicates the boundary between the U. S. Marine Corps (USMC) 1st Marine Division and the U. S. Army 77th Division (as of May 1, 1945). The area defined by a red line with hatches indicates an area of strong Japanese resistance from defenders from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 32nd Infantry Regiment defending the reverse slope of Maeda Escarpment. Also indicated are numbered hills including Hill 150 and Hill 152. On the bottom of the map is a solid line indicating "Corps Objective". Contour interval 10 meters.
