The map shows the area of southern Okinawa Island. To the east is Buckner Bay (Nakagusuku Bay). Indicated is Iwa, Tomui (Tomori), Mount Yaese (Mt. Yaese, Yaese Escarpment) including Yaeju-Dake (Big Apple), Yaza-Dake and Hill 153, Yonagusuku (Yonagushiku) and Yoza (Yuza). The solid line "–X X–" indicates the boundary line between the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) III Amphibious Corps to the west and U.S. Army XXIV Corps to the east (as of June 4, 1945). The red circles indicate areas of Japanese defenders including the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) remnants of 24th Division, 44th Independent Mixed Brigade (44th IMB) and 52nd Division.
