Okinawa Prefecture includes the Ryukyu Islands (Nansei Shoto) located in southern Japan. Borders the Philippine Sea to the east. Borders the East China Sea to the west. To the north is Kouri Jima. To the west is Kerama Island Group (Kerama Islands). To the northeast is Kyūshū. To the west-southwest is Taiwan (Formosa). The islands span 620 miles with the largest Okinawa Island. Postwar, occupied by the American military until administration was returned to Japan on June 17, 1972.
