Location Lat 4° 42' 0S Long 149° 30' 0E Garowe Island is part of the Witu Island Group. Borders Genta Bay to the west and Peter Harbor. Also known as "Garove Island". Prewar During 1927, SY Franklin with Australian Minister for Territories, Hon. C. W. Marr visited Garove Island. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese. Garowe Island was emplaced with anti-aircraft defenses. During American missions against Garowe (Garove) July 12, 1943–March 21, 1944 On November 19, 1943 Japanese destroyers including Makinami perform a troop transport and evacuation run to Garove Island. During late June 1944 occupied by the U.S. Army 185th Infantry, capturing a dual 25mm anti-aircraft gun, with both barrels removed. Also, a 20mm anti-aircraft gun.
