Lat 2° 30' 0S Long 150° 15' 0E  New Hanover Island is located off the western tip of New Ireland and Kavieng. The local name is Lavongai. Offshore is Selapiu Island.

Wartime History
During July 1941, following their landing at Kavieng, Japanese Navy Mai No 2 Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) landed at New Hanover and occupied the island without opposition. Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the war until September 1945.
