Location
Iturup Island is located in the southwest of the Kurile Islands surrounded by the Sea of Okhotsk. To the northeast is the Vries Strait and beyond is Urup Island (Uruppu, Уру́п). Russian spelling Итуру́п or Остров Итуру́п. Also known as Etuworop. Known in Japanese as Etorofu-tō. Also known as Staten Island or Etorofu Island. On the eastern center of the island is Kasatka Bay (Hitokappu Bay). Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.
Wartime History
Part of Japan until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. During September 1945 occupied by Soviet forces and the Japanese residence were expelled and became part of the Soviet Union (Russia).
