    Urup Island (Uruppu, Уру́п) Kurile Islands (Chishima-Rettō) Russia
Location
Urup Island is located in the center of the Kurile Islands and is rectangular in shape roughly 75 miles long and 12 miles wide, the fourth largest island in the chain. At the center of the island is Gora Ivao with an elevation of 4,678'. Wartime spelling Uruppu Island. Russian spelling Уру́п. Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.

Wartime History
During the Pacfic War, occupied by the Japanese Army 129th Infantry Regiment. On June 19, 1945 a B-24 flies the Alaska theater's longest mission, a 2,700 mile round trip lasting 15.5 hours and flying as far as Uruppu.
