San Cristobal Island is the largest island in Makira-Ulawa Province in the Solomon Islands. Also known as San Cristóbal or Makira Island. The island has the province's largest population of 40,419 during in 2009. To the northwest is Guadalcanal.

Torpedo Alley
During 1942–1943 the Americans the area southeast of San Cristobal was used by U. S. shipping bound for Guadalcanal was nicknamed "Torpedo Alley" in reference to it being a tempting target for Japanese submarines or aircraft armed with torpedoes to target.
