Location
The Shortland Island Group (Shortland Islands) is located at the northwest of the Solomon Islands surrounded by the Solomon Sea. The entire Shortland Island Group is known as "Alu" in the local language. The Japanese called the island "Shi-you-to-ran-do Shima". Sometimes called "The Shortlands" or "Shortlands" in reference to the entire Shortland Island Group. Borders Bougainville Island to the north, Fauro Island Group (Fauro Islands) to the east and the Treasury Island Group (Treasury Islands) to the south. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate (BSIP). Today part of Western Province in the Solomon Islands.

Korovou (Korouvo)  village located on the southeast corner of Shortland Island.
Lofang  village located on eastern Shortland Island.
Harehare  village located on eastern Shortland Island.
Kulitana Bay  borders southeast Shortland Island.
Tuha Channel (Tuha Bay)  located between Shortland Island, Poporang Island and Magusaiai Island.
Shortland Harbor  anchorage to the east of Shortland Island.
Shortland Harbor Seaplane Base (Tuha Channel)  Japanese seaplane base 1942-1943.
Kerukerua Island  small island located inside Tuha Channel.
Faisai Island  small island east of Shortland Island bordering Shortland Harbor.
Coconut Island  small island north of Faisi Island.
Alu Island (Pirumeri)  located to the southeast of Poporang Island.
Orlofe Island  small island to the east of Shortland.
Onua Island  small island to the east of Shortland Island.
Magusaiai Island (Morgusaia)  located to the south of Shortland Island.
Poporang Island  borders Tuha Channel and Shortland Island to the north and Alu (Pirumeri) to the south.
Nila  located on the north coast of Poporang Island.
Ballale Island (Ballalae, Balalai)  located to the northeast of Shortland Island.
Ballale Airfield  located on Ballale Island.
Harumu Island  located to the west of Shortland Island.
Harumukiki Island  small island located to the west of Shortland Island.
Saeghangmono Island  located to the west of Shortland Island.
