IJN Fubuki-class destroyer |
Ship History Built by Uraga Dock Company at Uraga. Laid down October 19, 1926 as Fubuki-class destroyer as Destroyer No. 43. Launched November 24, 1927. Commissioned June 30, 1928. Named Isonami 磯波 meaning breakers or surf. Wartime History On December 1, 1942 Isonami was one of four destroyers on a troop transport run bound for Buna. During the run, the convoy had air cover provided by A6M Zeros from the 252 Kōkūtai (252 Air Group) and 582 Kōkūtai (582 Air Group) . Midday while in the Solomon Sea, attacked by four B-17 Flying Fortress from the 43rd BG, 64th BS. During their attacks, Isonami sustained minor damage from a near miss before reaching Buna safely. Lost during the attack was B-17E "Miss Carriage" 41-2645 likely shot down by an escorting Zero. Sinking History On April 9, 1943 torpedoed and sunk by USS Tautog (SS-199).
