Wartime History

During the night of May 7-8, 1943 one of four Japanese destroyers that transited Blackett Strait when one was sunk and Oyashio and Kagero damaged by sea mines laid the day before by U. S. Navy destroyers. Afterwards, Michishio attempted to help the damaged vessels but was spotted by a coastwatcher and Allied aircraft intercepted the destroyers and damaged Michishio.

Sinking History
On October 25, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Battle of the Surigao Strait, Michishio was sunk by gunfire and torpedoes from destroyers USS McDermutt and USS Hutchins and sank into the Surigao Straigt.
