Shinking History
On February 17, 1944 during "Operation Hailstorm" Akagi Maru departed Truk Lagoon bound for Yokosuka. Escorted by destroyers Nowake, Maikaze and cruiser Katori.

While steaming to the northern part of Truk Lagoon, this vessel was straffed by an F6F Hellcats from USS Intrepid. Next it was attacked by five TBF Avengers from USS Bunker Hill that dropped bombs and scored only near misses. One plane from USS Cowpens straffed, but without any visible effects. Later, carrier aircraft from USS Yorktown, USS Essex and USS Cabot returned and scored multiple 500 lb. bomb hits on the vessel, causing explosions and to rapidly sink.
