Unidentified Japanese shipwreck off Shell Island (Phantom Maru)
Picket Boat
or Sub Chaser

? Tons
2 x machine guns

Wartime History
Sunk off Shell Island (Ebwaj). Likely a picket bout or sub chaser sunk between January 29 to February 1, 1944 by U. S. Navy (USN) aircraft from Task Force 58 (TF-58) and surface ship gunfire fire.

The 75 - 100' wreck is upright in 150' sandy bottom. Nicknamed "Phantom Maru" because of many unsuccessful attempts to located the vessel. The superstructure is in good shape. The bow has been bashed in and flattened. A machine gun is on the bow. The ship has a forwarded amidships hold, and an aft engine configuration. The wheelhouse and crew's quarters are located near the stern with a second machine gun. It has been stripped of many brass artifacts and china.
