The five Sullivan brothers aboard USS Juneau CL-52 during commissioning ceremony at New York Navy Yard
(Left to right) S2c Joseph E. Sullivan, Coxswain Francis H. Sullivan, S2c Albert L. Sullivan, S2c Madison A. Sullivan and GM2c George T. Sullivan. The brothers are holding a bulkhead door with a plaque that reads 1-117 Crew Quarters C-2C44" and in the background is the barrel of a 20mm cannon pointed upward. On November 13, 1942 after the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal the five brothers went Missing In Action (MIA) when USS Juneau CL-52 was sunk or died at sea awaiting rescue. This was the greatest military loss by any one American family, and their death caused the U.S. Navy to revise the policy about having brothers serve on the same ship.
