Popondetta
Airport
The Popondetta Airport was built by the
Americans, and was one of the many airfields in the Popondetta
/ Dubodora Area. It is still in use today, as the province's airport
that links it to the rest of the country.
B-25 "Bat Outta Hell"
The nearly complete Mitchell is along side the small terminal.
The plane is missing its tail, and the engines are off their mounts,
but otherwise the bomber is in good condition. Remains of the
"Bat Outta Hell" markings are on the nose.
In town, there is a memorial park with several
plaques and Japanese Antiaircraft guns on display. Some of the
other buildings in town have propellers or bomb casings in front
of them.
House of Japanese Veteran
For the Japanese, the fighting in the Buna / Gona area was disastrous.
This is the home of a Japanese veteran who has dedicated his life
to searching for the remains of his comrades. He and the Japanese
government have help PNG and this area with public works projects
