Maclean 1941

Aircraft History
Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank as L-14-H2 Model 14 Super Electra completed April 28, 1938. Constructors Number 1431. This aircraft had a bare aluminum finish with the Lockheed logo on the outer tail. Sold to Northwest Airlines and registered as NC17392. Later sold to Continental Airlines for $80,000.

During 1941, sold to W. R. Carpenter & Co, and disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia with Super Electra 1409, arriving in Sydney during April 1941 then moved to Mascot Airfield and reassembled. Registered in Australia as VH-ADS. Nicknamed "R.M.A. Carmania II". The company's de Havilland Express DH.86B VH-UYU was nicknamed "R.M.A. Carmania". A large horizontal stripe spanned the cabin windows to the rear door with a tapered end with the registration in large black letters on the rear fuselage. The upper tip of both tails had a large and thin horizontal stripe.

On May 30, 1941 took off from Sydney piloted by Captain Dick Mant on a 10 hour 40 minute flight to Rabaul.

During July 1941, damaged in a wheels up landing near Townsville due to a hydraulic failure. Temporarily repaired by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) then flown via Mascot Airfield to Essendon Airfield for further repairs by Australian National Airlines (ANA).

On August 14, 1941 took off from Port Moresby piloted by Captain R. O. Mant on the first day trip to Sydney.

Wartime History
During December 1941, this aircraft evacuated civilians from New Guinea under direction of the RAAF from Port Moresby and Wau Airfield to Cairns Airfield. On January 4, 1942 evacuated civilians from Rabaul after Japanese air raids, then continued evacuation flights from Wau Airfield and Port Moresby.

On January 27, 1942 while on the ground at Wau Airfield, damaged when a truck backed up into the propeller and damaged the engine crankcase. Engineers and spare parts were flown up on January 30, 1942 aboard Super Electra VH-ADT then quickly repaired. On February 2, 1942 this aircraft made a an evacuation flight from New Guinea to Australia. On February 12, 1942 arrives Sydney.

On February 13, 1942 took off from Cairns Airfield piloted by Captain K. Jackson for an evacuation flight to Wau Airfield. Afterwards, flown to Port Moresby then returned to Wau Airfield, then to Cairns Airfield for another evacuation flight.

Mission History
On February 14, 1942 at 4:00am took off from Cairns Airfield piloted by Clive Bernard with co-pilot Joss Crisp on flight bound for Wau Airfield to evacuate civilians. Shortly after take off due to bad weather dove into a mangrove swamp near Carins killing both pilots on impact. Afterwards, stricken from the record. Later, W. R. Carpenter was paid £25,000 as compensation by the War Damages Commission for the loss of the aircraft.
