Graves of British Prisoners Of War (POWs) discovered on Ballale Island by the Australian Army
At the center is an Australian Army soldier from 7 Infantry Battalion near the center mound with a wooden marker. Visible are the trunks of coconut palm trees with their fronds blown off by bombing and below vegetation regrowth.
AWM Caption: "Ballalae island, Bougainville area. 1945-11-10. The graves of Allied soldiers [British Prisoners Of War] killed by the Japanese. It is believed that between 300 and 800 allied prisoners of war were killed by the japanese after they completed the airstrip [Ballale Airfield] which was the main enemy base in the solomons area. They were buried in shallow trenches and to date, 57 bodies have been recovered. Troops of 7 Infantry Battalion now occupy the area."
