Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi or Nakajima. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M Zero manufacture number unknown. This aircraft was either an A6M2 Model 21 or A6M3 Model 22 with short barrel 20mm cannons in the wings. Painted overall dark green. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kokutai. This Zero ditched into the sea off Ablingi on the south coast of West New Britain, roughly 20 miles west of Gasmata. Wreckage This Zero was discovered late 1960s or early 1970s at a depth of 20m upright atop a coral reef with a rock underneath each wing, allowing a SCUBA diver to swim underneath the aircraft. After the initial discovery, the gun site was removed by a SCUBA diver and taken to Australia. In 1978, Rod Pearce removed the 20mm cannons and was able to clean and restore them so their breech would open using compressed air. References Contribute
