|
Aircraft History Built by Nakajima, estimated to be assembled during June 1942. Delivered to the IJN (IJN) as Type 2 Float Plane Fighter Suisen / A6M2-N Rufe manufacture number 739. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). This Rufe crashed at Rekata Bay. Possibly, abandoned while operating from Rekata Bay Seaplane Base. Wreckage Sometime between September 1943–November 1943 a team of Americans from Technical Air Intelligence Unit (TAIU) visited Rekata Bay to study the abandoned Japanese airplane and seaplane wreckage in the area. This Rufe was investigated and the manufacture number noted. No tail code or markings were noted. The team estimated the Rufe crashed August 12, 1943. Possibly, this Rufe was removed for further study. Ultimate fate unknown. References Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report (CEAR) No. 17 dated February 15, 1944 Thanks to Jim Long and Richard Dunn for additional information. Japanese Aircraft Makers' Plates and Markings Report No. 68 "Life of Japanese Combat Airplanes," March 20 1945 lists two Rufe aircraft: 821 and 739 (this aircraft). The data from this report are as follows: "RUFE Serial No. 739 Date of Assembly: Jun 42 [estimate] Date of Crash: 12 Aug 43 [estimate] Life in Months: 13 1/2" Contribute
