Aircraft History Built by either Mitsubishi or Nakajima during 1942. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black engine cowling. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number unknown (four digits). Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kokutai Air Group). Tail number 1130 in black. The rear fuselage had a vertical red stripe behind the Hinomaru (Rising Sun) insignia. Wartime History This Zero took off on a mission against Guadalcanal and ditched into shallow water off the north coast. The location of the loss is presumed to be in the Cape Esperance area. Possibly, ditched January 25, 1943 on a mission over Guadalcanal. In early February 1943, photographed when American forces occupied the Cape Esperance area. In the photograph, the Zero is partially above the surface. Visible is the black engine cowling and a bent propeller blade. The rear fuselage had a vertical red stripe and tail number 1130. In the background is the north coast of Guadalcanal.
