American waves from the cockpit of A6M2 Zero 1503 on Pavuvu Island
This Zero ditched into shallow water off Pavuvu Island in the Russell Islands and was dragged ashore. This Zero was photographed in a camp area with coconut palms showing the right side of the center section with some of the engine access panels missing and the right machine gun panel removed. The lower cowling shows evidence of being in the sea and the lower propeller blade is bent from ditching into the sea. The fuselage Hinomaru had a 75mm white outline. In the background is a group of Americans looking at the Zero.
