IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Nakajima. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black cowling. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number unknown (one of six possibilities: 2182, 1301, 1302, 8327, 2389 or 5352). Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). Tail code "35" (likely 1135) was painted in black on both sides of the tail. The rear fuselage had a red vertical stripe. This Zero was abandoned at Munda Airfield. Likely destroyed on the ground as the fuselage shows signs of deformation from nearby bomb blasts and the propeller was unbent. Wreckage In early August 1943, this Zero was captured by the U.S. Army. American Intelligence noted the manufacture number of this wreck.
