IJN Tainan Kōkūtai Former Assignments 22nd Koku Sentai

Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi at Nagoya in late February 1942. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black engine cowl. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number 4573. Wartime History Assigned to the 22nd Koku Sentai with a tail stripe. Next, assigned to the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group) with tail code V-179. This Zero was abandoned at Lae Airfield. Wreckage The tail and rear fuselage and were recovered then shipped to the United States and placed into storage. Reportedly, this Zero was recovered by Chuck Hagen of Minnesota and Randy Vining.
