IJN ? Kōkūtai

Aircraft History Built by either Mitsubishi or Nakajima. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Carrier Fighter / A6M2 Zero manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to ? Kōkūtai (Air Group). Tail code S-112. This Zero was abandoned at Taroa Airfield. Wreckage Until 1991, this Zero remained in situ. Recovery Two side skins from the vertical fin were recovered by John Sterling, in the 1991 after a year of negotiation, including sleeping in the jungle for nearly three months during the recovery of four Zeros: this aircraft plus A6M3 3318, A6M3 3685, A6M3 3148 and A6M2 31574. All were disassembled, crated and shipped to his home in Boise, Idaho during May 1991. Later sold to the Evergreen Air Museum in Oregon. Currently the rear tail section is owned by Vintage Aircraft Ltd. Possibly, will be used in the restoration of A6M3 3318. References Thanks to Ryan Towes for additional information Contribute
