Aircraft History
Built by Nakajima, this Zero was armed with two short barrel 20mm cannons with 100 round drums.
Ryan Toews adds:
"Nakajima produced A6M2 Zeros with 100 round magazine drums. The 100 round drums came into use after September 1943."
Wartime History
Ditched upside down into Karu Bay, off eastern New Ireland.
Brian Bennett recalls:
"We recovered a under wing bomb rack off the aircraft which i
still have and which is in pristine condition as well as two 20mm cannon
from
the wings. These were easy to get out as the wing structure had acted
as the sacrificial anode for the steel in the weapons. The weapons
and
magazines were in great shape and after minor cleaning. The mags on
these weapons were the more uncommon 100 round drum of which some A6M2-21
were converted."
