A6M5 Zero 3938 access panel with manufacture number stenciled in black kanji "Mitsubishi 3938 Number"
Brian Bennett adds:
"Stencil applied is a portion of the access panel that is removed to access the main wing fuel tanks of which their is one in each main plane inboard of the undercarriage. Any portion of this particular access panel could be considered very scarce as these panels were usualy chopped out so as to gain access to the very well made fuel tanks which were very handy either in the village or on the plantation. In aircraft that have crashed the possibility of any recovery at all of this panel either whole or part thereof is near impossible as this area is usually cooked or otherwise destroyed. The section of main fuel tank access panel/cover that is illustrated is 47cm - [18 inches] in length and 30 cm - [12 inches] in width. weighs 750 grams or approx' 2 pounds. The section of panel offered has been cut out of a larger more mangled panel. The stencil is clear and appears to be applied first then the phenolic laquer applied afterwards. nb-the experts may beg to differ. The external surface is somewhat distressed and has minor suface corrosion non-specular grey paint as applied to the lower half."
