Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi. At the factory, painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces with a black cowling. The fuselage Hinomaru (Rising Sun) had a white border. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as A6M5 Model 52 Zero Manufacture Number 4220. Wartime History Assigned to the 281 Kōkūtai (281 Air Group). Tai code 81-151 in white. During late 1943, operated from Tarawa Airfield. Wreckage On November 23, 1943 at the conclusion of the Battle of Tarawa, captured by U.S. Marines largely intact parked inside a revetment at Tarawa Airfield. The fate of this aircraft is unknown. It is unclear if this Zero was shipped elsewhere for technical evaluation or otherwise disappeared.
