B-17F "Old Baldy" 41-24455 tire repair at 7 Mile Drome
Caption: "New Guinea. Despite both elevators being badly damaged by ack ack fire and shrapnel having torn the tyres of both landing wheels to the canvas, a flying fortress was flown 400 miles to its base in new guinea, and landed safely. The pilot was 1st Lieut. James C. Dioffenderfer [sic Diffenderfer] of Logan, Virginia. The fortress was damaged in attacking a convoy. This picture shows the torn tyres." AWM Date: March 22, 1943 likely this photograph was taken on March 2, 1943 during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea when the damage was sustained or days afterwards while being repaired.
