Aircraft History Built by Boeing at Seattle. Construction Number 2688. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-17E Flying Fortress serial number 41-9216. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 11th Bombardment Group (11th BG), 42nd Bombardment Squadron (42nd BS). Nicknamed "Alley-Oop" (with hypen between the words) with at least eleven bomb markings with Japanese flags below them indicating combat missions flown. Also thirteen Japanese flags indicating aerial victory claims plus a ship silhouette. This B-17 flew combat missions over the South Pacific based at Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal and flew combat missions over the Solomon Islands. During June 1944 this B-17 was officially written off.
