USAAF 5th AF |
Aircraft History Built by Douglas at Long Beach under contract for Boeing. Constructors Number 32195. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-17G-85-DL Flying Fortress serial number 44-83554. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Converted to a CB-17G for use as a VIP transport, with seats added and the waist positions closed by windows. During 1945, this aircraft operated as a transport in the Philippines. Ultimate fate unknown. Steve Birdsall adds: "I believe this is one of the B-17s where the IARC has gone missing. It was involved in a taxi accident at Hickam Field on December 12, 1947 and reportedly written off as DBR. Another source indicates that it ended up as a drone in the Bomarc program."
