When the crew completed training in the 2nd Sea Search Attack Squadron (2nd SSAS), 1st Sea Search Attach Group (1st SSAG). Crew No. 10 was sent to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and assigned to the 43rd Bombardment Group, (43rd BG) "Ken's Men", 63rd Bombardment Squadron (63rd BS) "Sea Hawks" to fly night missions with radar for anti-shipping strikes. On November 5, 1943 the entire crew (with the exception of Fredericksen and Salley) went Missing In Action (MIA) aboard B-24D Liberator 42-40972 returning from an armed reconnaissance mission.
