Photograph of 1st Lt. William M. Hafner, his identification bracelet and a wartime letter
On November 5, 1943 gunner B-24D Liberator 42-40972 Missing In Action (MIA) on an armed reconnaissance mission. The bracelet was a gift from from his wife, resting atop his photo during training in Alabama. The attached silver heart helped confirm his identity years after his remains were recovered from the crash site in 2003–2004.
