On March 24, 1945 on a bombing mission B-24L Liberator 44-49607 developed an engine oil leak followed by multiple engine malfunctions and aborted the mission. Returning over the Ganges River delta swampland the bomber continued to lose altitude and pilot Margolies ordered the crew to bail lout. Six of the crew bailed out and landed safely. Two others Scranton and Cunningham had parachutes that failed to open in time and and remain listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Ditched is B-24L Liberator 44-49607 pilot 1st Lt. Nathan Margolies and went down with the bomber. The other three that stayed aboard survived the ditching. Map: Carte Internationale HIND 5000 Army/Air 6th Edition 1:1,00,000 NF-45.
