Pilot P/O Moreland J. Oxley, 435623 (MIA / KIA) Bentleigh, VIC Crashed February 6, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC). Constructors Number 1039. Wartime History During August 1944 delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as CA-19 Boomerang serial number A46-216. Assigned to No. 5 Squadron. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On February 6, 1945 took off from Piva North Airfield on Bougainville piloted by P/O Moreland J. Oxley on a mission leading RNZAF Corsairs against an enemy target. Returning from the mission. this Boomerang was flying at 50' when it suddenly was observed to pitch down and crash into the sea. After the crash, this aircraft was officially written off. When Oxley failed to return he was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA). Search After the crash, a barge arrived at the scene of the crash and found a wing fuel tank but no trace of the pilot. Memorials Oxley was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Bomana War Cemetery at the Port Moresby Memorial, panel 9. Afterwards, Oxley Airfield (Oxley Strip) on Bougainville was named in his honor.
