Pilot Captain John R. Alvord, USMC (MIA / KIA) MA MIA June 4, 1942 Aircraft History Built by Brewster Aeronautical Corporation. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F2A-3 Buffalo bureau number 01525. Wartime History Assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) to Marine Fighting Squadron 221 (VMF-221) with code MF-3. No known nickname or nose art. On December 25, 1941 fourteen F2A-3 Buffalos took off from USS Saratoga (CV-3) and landed at Midway Airfield. Mission History On June 4, 1942 took off from Midway Airfield piloted by Capt John Robert Alvord during the Battle of Midway on an interception mission. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Alvord was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Navy Cross and Purple Heart, posthumously. Alvord is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 2. He also has a memorial marker at First Congregational Church Cemetery in Kittery Point, ME.
