Pilot 2nd Lt David W. Pinkerton, Jr., O-007535 USMC (MIA / KIA) Toledo, OH MIA June 4, 1942 Aircraft History Built by Brewster Aeronautical Corporation. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F2A-3 Buffalo bureau number 01569. Wartime History Assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), Marine Fighting Squadron 221 (VMF-221), First Division with code MF-5. No known nickname or nose art. On December 25, 1941 fourteen F2A-3 Buffalos took off from USS Saratoga (CV-3) and landed at Midway Airfield. On March 28, 1942 one of eight eight F2A-3 unloaded from USS Curtiss (AV-4). Mission History On June 4, 1942 during the Battle of Midway took off from Midway Airfield piloted by 2nd Lt David W Pinkerton, Jr. on a patrol. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Pinkerton was officially declared dead on June 5, 1943. He earned the Navy Cross and Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 4.
