Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-46D-20-CU Commando serial number 44-78455. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 322nd Troop Carrier Wing, 374th Troop Carrier Group (374th TCG), 21st Troop Carrier Squadron (21st TCS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On September 22, 1945 took off from Biak Island piloted by 1st Lt. David S. Leatherman on a flight bound for Atsugi Airfield. This C-46 cashed into a mountain near Atsugi killing everyone aboard. Recovery of Remains After the crash, the remains of the crew were recovered and transported to the United States for permanent burial. Memorials Leatherman is buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, CO. Cowell is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) at plot F, grave 63. References FindAGrave - David S.
