(Page 4) Hand written statement by SSgt Henry O. Bauer
"This plane crashed in the Owen Stanley Mountains [sic] of New Guinea while on mission of dropping supplies to American & Aussie forces off Salamaua [sic Nassau Bay]. No one had opportunity to bail out. Pilot & Co-pilot were killed at their post. Also radio operator & navigator. An Aussie dump man [cargo dropper] was also killed. My flight chief & myself engineer escaped after the ship crashed. Also 3 Aussies drop men. 5 killed. 5 escaped. I saw [pilot] Capt. Beswick & [radio] Robert Robert B. Mulkmus body's [sic bodies]. They were both killed instantly but were thrown clear of the burning wreckage. The rest I never saw. My latest information. No one had yet been successful in reaching the wreck. Its in extremely difficult country. Hope this helps."
