Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47A-DK Skytrain serial number 42-92051. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 433rd Troop Carrier Group (433rd TCG), 67th Troop Carrier Squadron (67th TCS). Nicknamed "The Green Banana". Squadron Number / Buzz Number 304. Mission History On February 10, 1944 took off from Nadzab Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. Andrew J. Dobrisky on a transport mission. During the flight, this C-47 suffered an aerial collision with C-47 Dakota 42-92038 from the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron going over and under in. This Dakota's vertical stabilizer and rudder were bent over to the right. The bottom of rudder was bent to the left and smashed into the elevator. Damaged, this C-47 ditched into the sea roughly 1.5 miles off Mambare Bay off the coast of New Guinea, roughly 100 miles southeast of Lae. After ditching successfully, this aircraft floated for about 12 minutes before sinking. Pilot Dobrisky was killed in the crash and presumably went down with the aircraft. Fates of the Crew The rest of the crew reached shore and were rescued and returned to duty. Memorials Dobrisky was officially declared dead on February 14, 1946. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
