Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Constructors Number unknown. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47 Skytrain serial number unknown. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) in New Guinea. Mission History This C-47 ditched atop a coral reef to the south of Salamaua. Wreckage The wreckage of this C-47 is atop the the coral reef at Cape Room (Pakana Point) to the southeast. A portion of the wreckage is above the surface at low tide. Brian Bennett adds: "I think that it was a non-operational loss and if all got out then it would not be written up." Rod Pearce recalls: "Richard Leahy has visited this wreck. I also recall there is the wreck of a P-47 on the beach with its wheels down (I think) slightly down the coast from this wreck."
