IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Nakajima. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as C6N1 Model 11 Saiun (Myrt) manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known tail code or markings. This Myrt was abandoned at Moen No. 1 Airfield (Chuuk Airport) on Moen Island. Likely, stripped for usable parts by the Japanese. Later, dumped into Truk Lagoon off Moen Seaplane Base at the southern corner of Moen Island. Likely, dumped postwar by U.S. occupation forces in an effort to clean up the area. Wreckage This Myrt is sunk upright atop a coral sea floor. The engine, controls, instruments, portions of the wing and a fuel tank are missing, likely removed before the plane was dumped. Curt Block adds: "This Myrt also appears in Dan Baily's book however the aircraft is incorrectly identified as a Jill. The site had been marked but when we went the buoy was gone. I ended up in the water, hanging on to the side of the boat with my mask on while we trolled around until I found it. This aircraft however was dumped, not ditched. Dan Baily stated this in his book. I agree with him, as the aircraft lacks important things required for flight. It has no engine or cowling. No seats or instrument panels. No controls and parts of the wing including at least one fuel tank. It also exhibits no signs of damage expected with an impact with the water."
