D3A2 Val 3178 under restoration by Robert Diemert at Friendship Airfield
Dave Fletcher adds: "I last was at Diemert's place some 10-12 years ago as part of a Canadian Aviation Historical Society tour as part of the annual convention, so I am not in contact. I do remember him saying he would love to have had some of the Japanese blue/green primer as the metal underneath was perfect. I wasn't overly impressed with his restoration work but at least he ensured that the airframes survived. The Zeros were untouched at the time I was there, but the red/brown primer (which was faded) and the blue/green primer (which was pristine) stick in my mind. I took this photo of the restoration in the middle of 1969."
