F4U Corsair 17804 tail wreckage in southern Bougainville
The aircraft is painted with blue upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. The U.S. Star is outlined with a red border. The tail has black stenciled "NAVY 17804".
Caption: "Lieutenant Pilsbury [sic
Pillsbury], flying a Corsair fighter from a United States aircraft carrier [sic, Ondonga Airfield], off the Bougainville coast, was lost over Buin in September 1943 [sic November 21, 1943]. Twenty-five years later his plane and remains were discovered barely 400 yards from a road in thick jungle near Buin."
