Aircraft History
Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-3 Hellcat bureau number 26179.

Wartime History
Assigned to USS Sangamon (CVE-26) to Fighting Squadron 37 (VF-37). No known nose art or nickname.

Mission History
On December 1, 1943 took off from USS Sangamon (CVE-26) piloted by Ensign Andrew Szalay on a patrol mission and crashed into the lagoon in the center of Apamama Atoll. When this aircraft failed to return it was listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Memorials
Szalay was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 2.
