Pilot Ensign Robert F. Thomas Ditched January 12, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Constructors Number A-1257. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-3 Hellcat bureau number 66237. Wartime History Assigned to Fighting Squadron 20 (VF-20). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On January 12, 1944 took off piloted by Ensign Robert F. Thomas on a training flight and ditched off San Diego. Wreckage On October 9, 1970 salvaged from a depth of 3,400' by the U.S. Navy. Display Afterwards, display at San Diego Air & Space Museum until 1972. Between 1974-1992 it was displayed at Pima County Air Museum in Tucson, AZ in the markings of "Z11". Since 1992, displayed at the National Museum Of Naval Aviation (NNAM). Restored by Roy Stafford of Herlong, FL. Painted in the markings of a Hellcat assigned to USS Cabot (CVL-28) to Fighting Squadron 31 (VF-31).
