Pilot Lt(jg) William C. Henwood (rescued) Dunmore, PA Ditched May 8, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-5N Hellcat bureau number 72024. Wartime History Assigned to USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) to Fighting Squadron 49 (VF-49) "Forty-Niners". No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On May 8, 1945 took off from USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) piloted by Lt(jg) William C. Henwood and ditched off Ulithi. Rescue Henwood was rescued and returned to duty aboard USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). Later, on August 13, 1945 Henwood ditched F6F-5 Hellcat 78006 and was again rescued. Memorials Henwood passed away August 15, 1986. He was cremated and his ashes scattered.
